WEST POINT — Pickleball fever is spreading the country and not even West Point is immune.
No decisions regarding a pickleball court were made during the Monday evening meeting of the city council, but a brief discussion on the topic was held.
Councilman Dan Waters brought up the subject during the section of the meeting set aside for council members’ reports.
“You asked me to look at the basketball court to see if it's feasible to add a pickleball court onto the basketball court,” he said. “Dimensions of the basketball court is 30 by 54. A total pickleball court is 20 by 44, with a three foot net, so it is feasible.”
The basketball court is located at West Point’s Central Park.
Waters said one of the things to address is having a temporary net that can be taken down and put up by players and a place to store the net.
“In my mind, if somebody wants to play on the weekend, we can't really have it stored in the courthouse or something, so it has to be accessible,” he said. “And do we want it accessible to anybody at any time? And then they'd have to put the net up and then take it down when they’re finished.”
Putting some receiver pipes in the basketball court concrete was another thing Waters considered.
“(It’s) just like a hole with a pipe in it and then you slide the posts inside of them for the net and just pull them out,” he said. “It’ll be flush with the concrete so it won’t mess up the basketball.”
Standard pickleball court lines include a no-volley zone (also known as the kitchen), painted seven feet away from the net on both sides. There is a center line on each side, splitting the court into left and right service areas. A sideline marks the boundaries of the court.
Also during council member reports, councilman Joe Loving reported the baby changing stations have been installed in the park.
The West Point City Council approved an amendment to city ordinance regarding tree planting restrictions.
Council approved restricting the planting of trees to city right-of-way in addition to already in place restrictions of planting in street or parking areas.
West Point Mayor Paul Walker said there are a lot of problems currently with trees between the sidewalk and the street, when they should be on the other side of the sidewalk.
“When a lot of those were planted, the streets were normal in this town,” he said. “What we’re working on is if you have a tree taken down, that when you replace it, you would have to put it on the other side of the sidewalk rather on the (street) side.”
Denise McGowan was hired as city clerk, taking over from Lisa Mott, who resigned in July. McGowan’s first day on the job will be Aug. 15.
