New hire for human resources

The board approved hiring Jeanette Wenger as the new director for human resources. Wenger served as supervisor for HVS human resources and was promoted to director. “I was impressed with Ms. Wenger’s depth of knowledge, understanding of HR practices and policies,” said Superintendent Paul Salah.

An active search is underway for a new HR supervisor to fill Wenger’s former role.

“The talent throughout this district is so impressive,” said Wenger, at the August 15 board meeting. “I have an incredibly hard-working HR team. As a department, I look forward to continuing to serve the district in collaboration with Dr. Salah, COAT colleagues and the Board of Education.”

The board approved the purchase of Nightlock door stoppers for the district’s middle and high schools, at a cost not to exceed $120,000. In an emergency, the door stopper slips under the door from the classroom side, preventing anyone from entering the room. They will be distributed as a safety measure at secondary schools until special safety hardware arrives for each classroom.

“Nightlock is an additional layer of security with doors being locked while school is in session. It is an interim solution,” said Board President Tom Wiseman.

The 2019 bond approved by the community allowed the purchase of new doors and hardware that allows teachers to lock their doors from inside the classroom. All elementary schools now have the new doors, and hardware, but the hardware order for middle and high schools will not arrive for approximately a year and a half.

Pilot program for electric buses

The possible purchase of electric buses for HVS is being studied, but the issue of range prevents the district to converting to electric buses.

Electric buses have a maximum range of 75 miles before being charged. HVS buses travel greater distances daily. HVS is studying the purchase of an electric bus for sporting events.

“We want this to be a top priority leading us to be first in line to roll out this initiative,” said Board President Tom Wiseman.

“The clean bus program is the electrical bus program and we’re taking a look at some conversion there and further clean air opportunities.”
