GATES, N.Y. — Electric buses will deliver kids to school in the Gates Chili district.
The two new vehicles were shown off this week.
New York state helped the Gates Chili CSD buy the buses, which are more expensive than diesel buses, but will save money in the long run.
Advocates say the buses can save operators $25,000 in repairs over the life of the vehicles. That's on top of a projected $35,000 that will be saved in fuel costs.
"I'll be able to hear the students way better," said bus driver Charles Vorndran. "If there is an emergency on the bus, I will be able to react quicker. If you love kids and you want a job that is very, very fulfilling, there you go. Come be a bus driver. More fulfilling job than ever."
The district says there will be safety training for the buses, as they are quiet and students may not hear them coming.
