No fewer than 25 airports in the country are exposed to security breaches due mainly to substandard fencing, investigations have revealed. At the moment, only international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt have partial perimeter fencing, while the others owned by the Federal Government are not yet properly fenced, a situation which has led to encroachments on the lands by some unwanted elements. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) security guidelines prescribes that all airports must be secured with double perimeter fences. Its regulations mandate standard airports to have both perimeter and security fences. The ICAO annex 14 sees a perimeter fence, while annex 17 equally has provisions for a security fence. In an effort to meet the ICAO standard, FAAN had painstakingly applied safety measures in line with international best practice to boost security and safety within the nation’s airports. Investigations show that there is an urgent need for the FAAN to fortify the already existing perimeter fencing as required by the ICAO to avert more security breaches in the future. On May 19, 2022, the mangled body of an unknown person was found on Runway 18R/36L of the International wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The human remains were suddenly found on Runway 18R during a routine runway inspection by FAAN personnel. Earlier, in March 2022, gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked Kaduna Airport, killing the guard at the Voice Omni Directional Radio (VOR) site, a Navigational Aids equipment belonging to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). The sudden attack, which took place at midday, affected the smooth take-off of flights as most of the airport workers were running helter-skelter for safety. Also in March, 2021, the airport’s staff quarters, close to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), were invaded. Investigations have shown that most of the existing fences of airports in the country are poorly manned and could be easily breached by unwanted guests. It was also gathered that the poorly built fences, coupled with underutilisation of airport premises, especially those closer to the fences, had given room for thick bushes to grow, covering up the fences in some instances and allowing hoodlums to take cover, a situation inside sources have described as dangerous. Findings also revealed that although Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt Airports boast of the best fencing infrastructure in the country, they still fall short of the ICAO standard. To meet the ICAO recommended practices, industry observers said there was a need for adequate provision of huge funds to construct perimeter and operational fences across all the over 25 airports operated by FAAN. The funds are expected to take care of the several hundreds of kilometres of landmass across the airports in the country. The ICAO security guidelines instructs that all airports must be secured with double perimeter fences. To meet this specification, nets, barbed wire, cameras, sensors, infrareds, intrusion detection devices are required, all of which would cost close to N1 trillion to fix.

The leadership of Traditional Religion Worshippers Association (TRWASO), Osun State Chapter, has warned politicians against fomenting trouble during the forthcoming governorship poll in the state. The group said whoever that foments trouble during the election would face the wrath of Sango and Ogun, calling on the stakeholders to shun violence in the overall interest of the state. The warning was contained in a statement signed by the TRWASO President, Dr Oluseyi Atanda, in commemoration of his first anniversary in office as the leader of the group. Atanda enjoined other religious groups in the state to also begin prayers to ward off violence, saying politicians and their supporters must be law-abiding and refrain from acts that could jeopardise peace. The statement read in part, “As we approach the climax of political interplay in Osun, we as spiritualists will continue to pray to God Almighty and make supplications to the terrestrial to have a peaceful electioneering outing. “Let me state that it is likely that some desperate politicians will attempt a do or die approach and attempt to set Osun on fire, God Olodumare will not allow this to happen. “I want to enjoin all other religious groups to embark on prayers for a peaceful transition in Osun and admonish trouble makers to stop, otherwise they will incur the wrath of Sango and Ogun. Osun is peaceful and we want peace for all”. While reviewing activities of the group in the last one year, Atanda said his administration had strengthened its local government branches, while work has been progressing on the secretariat complex of the organisation.

As the Lagos State Government commenced the enforcement of the ban on the operation of motorcycle (okada) riders in the state, the State Police Command has seized 140 motorcycles and arrested 16 passengers and riders. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who disclosed this, said 94 of the motorcycles were impounded by the police, while others were seized by men of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Enforcement Agency. “There was over 90 per cent compliance, but some motorcyclists still came out and we arrested and charged them to a mobile court. “Sixteen passengers and motorcyclists were arrested; the majority of the motorcyclists did not carry passengers and some of the motorcyclists abandoned their motorcycles after sighting policemen,” he explained. The state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had on May 18, 2022, announced the ban on okada riders at a meeting with the state Commissioner of Police, Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers at the State House in Alausa. The governor banned operations of motorcycles otherwise known as okada in six local government areas including Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, and Apapa areas of the state. The ban, which took effect from Wednesday, June 1, followed the killing of a sound engineer, David Imoh, in the Lekki area of the state. The Tide learnt that in Surulere and Eti Osa LGAs, there was high level of compliance as there was no Okada rider within the vicinities patrolled by the policemen. The same level of compliance was recorded at Lekki Phase 1 as bikes were not working in the area. The Tide, however, gathered that the ban on okada is beginning to have a toll on residents as many commuters were stranded, while motorists hiked the transport fares. The Director, Press and Public Affairs, Lagos State Task Force, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, said there was no resistance from the okada riders during the enforcement operation. “Task force officers are everywhere in the affected areas; another team has just been deployed to Abule-Egba,” he said. It was learnt that the police patrolled the six affected councils on Tuesday, a day to the ban, to warn those who wanted to defy the state directive. The patrol team comprised of the police, Army, Navy, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Rapid Response Squad, task force and other security agencies. The General Manager of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Ifalade Oyekan, said the government’s action was justified. “The government cannot fold its arms as the menace of okada riders increase on a daily basis,” he was quoted as saying in a statement on the state government’s website. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho, said the ban was in the interest of all residents and visitors. He said, “It is backed up by security and safety concerns. In the first quarter of the year, we had 1,712 accidents in Lagos State and 45 per cent of them were from okada riding. We discovered that youths aged 30 to 39 ride okadas because they want a faster means of livelihoods and they do not want to work. The chicken was feeding on something ever before corn arrived. Lagos State is the smallest state in Nigeria with the highest population of people, size and landmass, so why can’t people survive without okadas? “You have to be alive before thinking about what to feed on and earning a living. We believe that there are decent ways of earning a living, like the government providing land so that bike men can farm or otherwise, they can go to the Lagos State Trust Fund to seek funds. Commuters should rely on other means of transportation instead of okadas”.

It was a free-for-all-fight at the National Secretariat of the All  Progressives Congress (APC), Abuja on Wednesday as drivers, security officials and supporters of the ruling party exchanged blows over a cash gift from Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi. Umahi, who is also a presidential aspirant of the party, had come to see the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, two days after he was screened by the John Odigie-Oyegun-led presidential screening committee in Abuja. After the closed door meeting, which lasted over an hour, Umahi brushed aside questions from journalists and headed for his car. As he made to enter, the governor turned and threw a bale of N50,000 crispy notes at the waiting crowd of party supporters and secretariat workers who were bidding him goodbye. His action created a stir as many APC supporters, security details and drivers exchanged blows as they rushed to share the largesse. Umahi was one of the 23 aspirants recently screened by the Odigie-Oyegun’s screening panel at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja. The other 22 aspirants included National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Senior Pastor of the Citadel Global Church, Tunde Bakare; former Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba; Jigawa State Governor, Mohammed Badaru; Senator Ajayi Borroffice; former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun; former Senate President, Ken Nnamani and US-based Pastor, Nicholas Felix. Others were the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello and Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade. The remaining were oil magnate, Tein Jack-Rich; Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti; former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ogbonnaya Onu; former Minister of Information under the late General Sani Abacha regime, Ikeobasi Mokelu and embattled former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha. The Tide reports that the outcome of the APC screening exercise which ended on Tuesday is still being awaited as at the time of filing this report. The Tide also reports that the party’s presidential primary which was initially scheduled to hold on May 29/30 at the Eagle Square, Abuja, will now hold between June 6-8 at the same venue. The main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), successfully concluded its presidential primary last Sunday with the former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku, emerging as the party’s flagbearer.
