If you do anything outside this weekend drink your water. The temps are going to skyrocket into the unsafe zone. Be careful out there kids.
I’ve been debating continuing this series. The number of Covid-19 cases are once again climbing. I’m just going to straight-up steal what Ross Catrow wrote this morning in his Good Morning RVA series because it best sums up my feelings. It’s likely I won’t be attending RiverRock simply because I’m once again becoming crowd averse. Not judging those that do attend everyone has to decide how much risk they’re willing to take. Me I’m a no on RiverRock but will continue to attend Kickers games for the foreseeable future.
The CDC updated their COVID-19 Community Level numbers last night and now Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield are all at the “medium” or “yellow” level. The 7-day case rates per 100,000 people in each locality, respectively, are: 248, 321, 268. Worryingly, the new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people for the region is 9.8. Once that number hits 10 (on a Thursday), a locality switches to “high” Community Level and the CDC guidance is to wear masks indoors regardless of vaccination status. It seems pretty likely that’ll happen next Thursday. I dunno y’all, 9.8 is pretty dang close to 10, and, for the next little while, you will not find me indoors without a mask on my face.
Dominion RiverRock at Brown’s Island and along the James River May 20-23rd, Hours Vary, Free
I was happy to see this back until the Covid numbers shot back up. So I’ll be checking out some of the bike events that I can do without being jammed up against folks. I’m going to miss you dock-jumping dogs.
From yoga classes to trail runs, group art installations to mountain biking, sustainability projects to music, fishing and paddling on the James, and more…it’s all happening right here in Richmond!
Highlighted by the James River, surrounding trail network, and numerous parks, we are lucky to have so many options for outdoor adventure! Let’s #RockTheOutdoors and discover new ways to experience Richmond’s amazing outdoor scene.
Mutts at Maymont May 21st, 3-7:30 PM, $10 per dog in advance, $12 at the gate, Tickets
I’m a dog person not a cat person. I enjoy seeing leashed dogs enjoying the local parks. I’ve always known that Maymont and Lewis Ginter are dog-free most days but this weekend is not most days. Get you pooch and check out Maymont.
Not at Maymont but he might be.
Every dog has its day, and at Maymont, that’s May 21, from 3–7:30pm. Dogs are invited to bring their humans along for an afternoon of tail-wagging fun on the Carriage House Lawn. Enter through the Magnolia Gates and stroll the grounds on the Pup Path. Or just chill out with pup cups and frozen custard, enjoying live music by Serenata and food and adult beverages. Sign up for a photo shoot by photographer Brittany Rose Petography. There are only a few times a year when dogs are invited to visit Maymont, so don’t miss your chance! Can’t make it May 21? This event also occurs June 18.
New this year: Meet adoptable pets from Richmond Animal Care & Control, or treat your furry friend to a shopping spree in the Barketplace.
Registration is required for dogs.
Friday Happy Hour at City Stadium May 20th, 5:30-8:30 PM, Pay as you go.
This falls into my safe zone. It’s outside, plenty of room to spread out and there’s beer and food.
Richard Hayes is the co-founder of RVAHub. When he isn't rounding up neighborhood news, he's likely watching soccer or chasing down the latest and greatest board game.
Mother Nature is not playing nice with our weekends but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun.

There’s just something awesome about a small county fair. The weather for the fair isn’t looking awesome but maybe you can get out there on Sunday or dodge showers on Saturday.

Rainbow Roll at Rollerdome May 15th, $10 (includes skate rental)
Going to the skating rink was a nearly weekly ritual for me when I was in Junior High. My palms still get sweaty at the thought of couples skate. Style Weekly has an article on Rainbow Roll and the Rollerskate Revival, so you don’t have to go into more details on my teenage awkwardness.
DJs, Drag Queens, and Roller Skates. What more could you ask for? $10 at the door includes admission and skate rental with a portion of admission going to VA Pride. Mask Required. This is a sober event.
If you don’t know already there is the Monument 10K is Saturday. Here is our list of non-running events to go do this weekend.

African American Book Festival at Richmond Public Library April 16th, 11AM – 4 PM
Just heard about this festival so can’t add much. If your near the library on Saturday swing on in.
Virginia Business Expo Associates and Richmond Public Library proudly presents Richmond 1st Annual African American Book Festival.
“The African American Book Festival” was built to give the cemented and newly emerging authors of our culture a platform to spread the messages that are embedded in the pages of their iconography. With one goal in mind, we want to educate, entertain, and impact the Richmond community through African American literature, by shining light on the stories told in their books.
This event is a great opportunity for community members to meet and engage with their favorite black authors. There will be several featured authors.
Come out to support your black authors, meet them face to face, get pictures, buy books at discounted prices, network with other professionals, and bring back reading books into normalcy and support authors in spreading their messages.
What can you expect This event will feature author and publisher exhibits, author discussions and book signings, entertainment, networking and door prizes. The event will attract a wide array of authors, publishers, book clubs, libraries and individual readers. Books available will be suitable to all ages; from children, teenagers, young adults to adults. Authors will present fiction, poetry, nonfiction, memoirs, self-help, and spiritual offerings.
This event is free and open to the public. Come enjoy this free community Festival that celebrates the beauty, power, passion, and excitement of the written work.
