SUPERIOR — The Wisconsin Point lighthouse was vandalized and its light extinguished Tuesday, Aug. 9, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The vandalism not only damaged a landmark, but also put mariners, who depend on the lighthouse for safe navigation, in danger. The privately-owned 70-foot-tall structure houses the Superior entry’s south light.

A fisherman notified the Coast Guard Tuesday morning that the door to the lighthouse was open, according to a Superior police report. A Coast Guard team responded and got the light working again.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Eddie Gutierrez reported that the hinge to the exterior door was broken, the locks on three interior doors were damaged and four windows were broken out. It is believed the damage happened either Monday night or Tuesday morning, because the door was left open and someone would have noticed it sooner if it happened a while ago.

No damage estimate was given; nothing appeared to be missing.

The Coast Guard Investigative Service is seeking information and leads on the break in. Visit the online tip line or use the CGIS mobile app to leave an anonymous tip.
